Google Doodle celebrates Ada Lovelace

Google celebrated a true tech pioneer with a Monday Doodle commemorating the 197th birthday of Ada King, the Countess of Lovelace — more commonly known as Ada Lovelace.
Lovelace is often credited with being the first computer programmer. She worked with Charles Babbage, who laid out the plans for the Difference Engine and Analytical Engine — two machines designed to store numbers and data that were the forerunners to the modern computer.
Lovelace was the daughter of the poet Lord Byron, though her parents separated shortly after her birth. She was raised by her mother, Annabelle Milbanke Byron, described by the Encyclopedia Britannica as “mathematically inclined” and determined to raise Lovelace with a focus on the sciences to combat whatever artistic temperament she may have inherited from her father.
At the age of 17, Lovelace was among the first to grasp the importance of Babbage’s machines, Google noted. In her correspondence, as reported by New Scientist magazine, Lovelace said that “the Analytical Engine weaves algebraical patterns just as the Jacquard-loom weaves flowers and leaves.” She also noted that the Analytical Engine “does not occupy common ground with mere calculating machines” and had the potential to run complicated programs of its own.Read more

Ideas Aswatha and her hundred percent successful straight hair story

Aswatha was a young cheerful girl.Nothing can go out of  notice from her eyes. She is a good observer and listener. She was noticeable in school for her beautiful curly hair and friendly loving smile.

She loves going to school earlier in time to spend more time with her friends. One day in the school, she was standing with her friends in the corridor near to the playground.

A pretty girl with long straight hair walked opposite to them. She was admired by everyone including Aswatha.

Aswatha's eyes popped opened at the sight of the lovely long straight hair. The upbeat thoughts about curly hair turned negative in her mind.

She went home and asked  her mom about the curly hair which she has.

In return, her mother inquired. Aswatha narrated the whole incident happened in the school.

To reduce her anxiety, Aswatha's mother explained her about the different types of hair. She added that some people have straight hair and some curly and other group have both curly and straight hair mixed. The type of hair depends on the shape of our hair follicle and  genes she said.

Finally Aswatha's mother convinced her by saying that Aswatha's father and herself have curly hair and that's the reason for her curly hair saying she ended the conversation.

Aswatha can't control her desire for straight hair. She cried and asked her mother to straighten her hair.

Her mother responded her sweetly telling that she is looking very cute with the curly hair. She got cooled after hearing the praise of words of her mother.

But mom I m not going to give up my desire.I still remember your powerful words - "Try,try until you reach your desires".So please allow me to try,she insisted her mother to give permission to straighten the hair.

Since she don't want to disappoint her daughter she agreed. She asked Aswatha not to do things which will hurt. She reminded her to keep in mind that, "God always gives the best to us" and left the place telling her to be careful.

Now Aswatha started thinking about the ways to straighten her hair.

*She thought cutting the curly edges of her hair.

*Exposing her curly edges to fire using match sticks

*Toasting her hair

*Ironing her hair

*Setting out to parlour

The chemical products and the fire may hurt and damage her hair.

Being an obedient girl, Aswatha strictly followed her mother's words. She dropped all her risky ideas and cracked her mind for some cool ideas.

One day after having a hair bath, she brushed her hair in wet.

To her surprise, all the curly edges looked straight when she brushed the hair in wet.

But her happiness ended in a short period.

As soon as the hair got dried up,her hair again turned up curly.

Being a young sportive girl,She thought that fifty percent she had found the way to fulfill her desire.

Later one fine day after thinking for hours and days together, the young chic came with a solution which she believed it to be perfect.

She wants her hair to be wet for all the time to keep her hair straight.

She sprayed the water in her hair and tried to keep it wet whenever it get dried.

Then she made jaggery solution  by heating water and jaggery.

Similar way she prepared sugar solution by heating sugar and water.

Both preparation gave her shiny sticky solution. She decided to use both the ideas seperately.

Since wetting the hair is getting dried up,this time Aswatha tried a way little bit different.

First she washed her hair. Then she heated the caster oil and applied in her hair. Quickly, she brushed  her hair in the heat moisture of the sticky oil.Her hair looked healthy, shiny and straight.

To be more sure and to stop turning her hair curly,

she applied over it the above mentioned jaggery solution.

And another day she applied the sugar solution over it following the same procedure.

She keep on finding new ideas with improvement in her results.

Morgan Stanley is fined $5m for Facebook IPO disclosure

Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS), the principal underwriter of the $109 billion initial public offering of Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) was fined $5 million by Massachusetts regulators for improper supervision of analysts before the May 17 IPO.

According to the regulator, there was a conflict of interest when a senior banker coached a Facebook official on what to say to analysts.
It also claimed that the two firms failed to tell all investors that revenues may be lower than forecast.
Many investors criticised Facebook as its shares fell following the listing.
The sale, which was over-subscribed and took place in May 2012, was one of the most hotly anticipated stock floatations in recent history and valued the eight-year-old firm at $104bn.
Facebook sold close to 421 million shares, at $38 a share, raising $16bn.
However, the hype surrounding the listing waned shortly after trading started on the New York stock exchange as shares fell below their listing price on concerns about the pace of future profit growth.
Facebook's shares have dipped almost 30% since its listing in May.
Morgan Stanley did not confirm or deny the allegations by the regulator.
However, it said in statement that it was pleased to have reached a settlement and to have put the matter behind it.
The problem affecting Facebook was that an increasing number of people were visiting its website via mobile devices, such as phones or tablet computers.
Facebook warned that because it did not display advertising on the mobile versions of its website, then there may be a decline in revenue from ad sales, its biggest source of income.

See, Hear, Speak

Are Kids' Senses Ready for School?

When setting off for kindergarten or first grade, a child may feel prepared with a backpack loaded with crayons, pencils and paper. But a good start in the classroom depends on more than just school supplies. Healthy hearing, vision, speech and language are key to success at school. If a child has problems in these areas, the sooner they're spotted, the better they can be treated.
Sometimes problems with senses, speech or language can fly under the radar. A child with a lazy eye or a little hearing loss might get along just fine at home or in daycare. But when children get to school, minor difficulties may start to catch up with them. They may have trouble focusing and flourishing in the classroom. NIH-funded scientists are searching for better ways to recognize and treat these types of problems as early as possible.
Senses
Permanent hearing loss used to be caught around age 2. Now newborns are screened for hearing loss before leaving the hospital. When problems are diagnosed, most children are fitted with hearing aids in the first few months of life.
But hearing problems can also arise in older kids. "Some children can be born with normal hearing and develop hearing loss later for various reasons," says Dr. Mary Pat Moeller, who studies childhood deafness and language development at Boys Town National Research Hospital in Nebraska. Head injuries and meningitis are just a few conditions that can lead to later hearing loss.
"We rely on normal hearing to pick up concepts and learn new words," Moeller says. But a noisy classroom can be tough for kids who can't hear well. "Children with undetected hearing loss may look like they have attention deficits. They may miss what they've been told because they're just not hearing clearly," Moeller says.
Screening for hearing loss in school-age kids is a familiar process. Children wear headphones and raise their hands as they hear a series of tones. Some 5% to 10% of school-age children don't pass these tests. Kids with hearing loss can be fitted with hearing aids.
Children learn language by listening to others and engaging in conversations. But kids with hearing loss can miss out on some of this experience. Moeller and her colleagues are studying how children with hearing loss develop language. Early results from this NIH-funded research point to several factors that can help. These include the quality and fit of hearing aids, how often kids get speech and language training and how often parents have conversations with their children.

Google has released a native version of its Maps app for the iPhone

Google's new iPhone app introduces some functionality previously restricted to Android devices.

Features Google has introduced that were not available in its earlier iPhone app include:
  • Voice guided turn-by-turn directions, with estimated travel times.
  • Indoor panoramic images of buildings that have signed up to its Street View Business Photos service.
  • 3D representations of the outlines of buildings that can be viewed from different angles
  • Vector-based graphics based on mathematical lines and points rather than pre-created bitmap graphics, making it quicker to zoom in and out of an area.
Among the facilities Google's iPhone app lacks that are present in its Android equivalent are indoor maps, the ability to download maps for offline viewing, and voice search.

Nationwide Mobile Number Portability by February 2013:Kapil Sibal

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal today said nationwide Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is expected to be rolled out by February next year, which will allow users to retain their numbers even if they move from one state to another.

"For the timely implementation of the National Telecom Policy (NTP) 2012, the Department of Telecom has finalised broad agenda for next three months from December 2012 to February 2013," Sibal said at the 'India Telecom 2012' here.
Some of the key initiative in course to be completed by February 2013 are approval of spectrum assignment and pricing, unified licences regime, M&A guidelines, finalisation of guidelines for spectrum sharing, creation of fund for R&D and manufacturing and of course, MNP on a nationwide basis, he added.

Currently, a user is allowed to switch to a different operator within his/her circle, while retaining his/her phone number.

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal today said nationwide Mobile Number Portability (MNP) is expected to be rolled out by February next year.
Under NTP 2012, the government had envisaged implementing MNP on a nationwide level allowing users to retain their mobile numbers even when they shift to a different telecom circle.

India has 22 telecom circles. According to Trai, by the end of October 2012, about 75.14 million subscribers have submitted their requests to different service providers for porting their mobile number.

In the month of September 2012, total number of subscribers who have submitted their request for MNP stood at 5.36 million.

Best way to pacify baby during immunisations

A spoonful of sugar solution given to babies during immunisation may reduces pain by triggering the release of pain-relieving chemicals in the body or by contacting taste receptors that induce feelings of comfort.

The lead researcher Dr Manal Kassab of the Jordan University of Science and Technology in Irib, Jordan, said: "Giving babies something sweet to taste before injections may stop them from crying for as long.Although we can’t confidently say that sugary solutions reduce needle pain, these results do look promising.”

Immunisations cannot be ignored because when the baby is 18 months old it must have had around 15 different injections to protect against various infectious diseases, including measles, mumps and rubella.Though the  pain during immunisation  is not avoidable , researchers have now  recommended a new simple technique to comfort babies during immunisations.

A new research study states that "Babies given a sugar solution two minutes before immunisation cried far less than those given plain water".

So parents can lessen the sting of an injection using this sweet technique and can soothe their babies during  immunisations.

Vaccination

Dr. Harvey Karp, a pediatrician, in the book “The Happiest Baby on the Block,”mentioned five measures known as the five S’s to soothe baby during immunisations.

*wrapping the baby snugly in a light blanket,
*putting the baby in a side or stomach position in the guardian’s arms,
*gently swaying,
*having the baby suck on a pacifier,
*and making a shushing sound in the child’s ear.

Together, these steps calm the baby by mimicking the sensations of being in the womb, according to Dr. Karp, and can be used more broadly by parents to ease a fussy or colicky baby.

The Seven Wonders of the World

Why Seven Wonders of the World?
The number seven was chosen because the Greeks believed it to be the representation of perfection and plenty because it was the number of the five planets known anciently plus the sun and moon.

The seven wonders were:

  • Great Pyramid of Giza
  • Hanging Gardens of Babylon
  • Statue of Zeus at Olympia
  • Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
  • Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
  • Colossus of Rhodes
  • Lighthouse of Alexandria

Today, the only ancient world wonder that still exists is the Great Pyramid of Giza.

The Great Pyramid of Giza (also known as the Pyramid of Khufu or thePyramid of Cheops) is the oldest and largest of the three pyramids in the Giza Necropolis bordering what is now El Giza, Egypt. It is the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the only one to remain largely intact.Egyptologists believe that the pyramid was built as a tomb for fourth dynasty Egyptian Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops in Greek) over a 10 to 20-year period concluding around 2560 BCE. Initially at 146.5 metres (481 feet), the Great Pyramid was the tallest man-made structure in the world for over 3,800 years. Originally, the Great Pyramid was covered by casing stones that formed a smooth outer surface; what is seen today is the underlying core structure.

1.The Great Wall of China is a series of fortifications made of stone, brick, tamped earth, wood, and other materials, generally built along an east-to-west line across the historical northern borders of China in part to protect the Chinese Empire or its prototypical states against intrusions by various nomadic groups or military incursions by various warlike peoples or forces. Several walls were being built as early as the 7th century BC;these, later joined together and made bigger, stronger, and unified are now collectively referred to as the Great Wall.Especially famous is the wall built between 220–206 BC by the first Emperor of ChinaQin Shi Huang. Little of that wall remains. Since then, the Great Wall has on and off been rebuilt, maintained, and enhanced; the majority of the existing wall was reconstructed during the Ming Dynasty.
