10 Facts about Nobel Prize

1.Elinor Ostrom won the Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences in 2009 for her 'analysis of economic governance,especially the commons'.The Economic Sciences is the only category that has only 1 woman laureate.

2. CV Raman or Sir Chandrasekhar Venkata Raman is the first Indian Scientist to win the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1930.He was awarded for his discovery of "Raman Effect" or "Raman Scattering".

3.Nobel Prize is named after Alfred Bernhard Nobel.He was a Swedish philanthropist,chemist, engineer, innovator, and armaments manufacturer. He was the inventor of dynamite.According to his last written will,the Nobel prizes was established after his death. The First Nobel prizes were awarded in 1901 in the following categories - Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace." Mathematics is the only category which has no Nobel Prize".

4.Between 1901 and 2012, the Nobel Prizes and the Prize in Economic Sciences were awarded 555 times.

5.The Nobel prizes(the most prestigious award) are awarded in Stockholm,( Sweden) by the The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences .The Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, (Norway) by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

6.The Nobel Laureates  will receive  three things: a diploma, a medal and a document confirming the prize amount.All medals made before 1980 were struck in 23 carat gold. Today, they are made from 18 carat green gold plated with 24 carat gold.

7.The Nobel Prize amount for 2012 is set at Swedish kronor (SEK) 8.0 million per full Nobel Prize (1.2 million USD at the time of the 2012 Nobel Prize Announcement).

10.Amartya Sen, CH (born 3 November 1933) is an Indian philosopher and economist who was awarded the 1998 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for his contributions to welfare economics and social choice theory, and for his interest in the problems of society's poorest members.Sen's books have been translated into more than thirty languages over a period of forty years. He is a trustee of Economists for Peace and Security. In 2006, Time magazine listed him under "60 years of Asian Heroes" and in 2010 included him in their "100 most influential persons in the world".New Statesman listed him in their 2010 edition of "World's 50 Most Influential People Who Matter".He is the alumini of  Santiniketan, West Bengal, India.
