10 Random World History


1.Mount Everest is named after Sir George Everest.He was the Surveyor General of India.He came to India in 1823 to complete the Great Trignometrical Survey of the Subcontinent.His triangulation theories helped locate the summit.

2.Buddha was born in Lumbini near Kapilavasthu,in modern day Nepal.He was the son of King Suddhodhana of the Shakyadan. Lumbini was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.

3.Pataliputra is today known as Patna and is one of the oldest cities in India.Pataliputra was found in the 5th century BCE  by Ajatshatru,King of Magadha.

4.West Germany was created from areas occupied by USA,Great Britain and France at the end of World War II with Bonn as its capital.The Federal Republic of Germany was formed in 1990,by re-uniting West and East Germany.

5.Ceylon was the British Colonial name for the Island,derived from the early Portuguese name, Ceilao.It was dropped in 1972 when the country became a Republic and was named Sri Lanka.

6.Bharat Ratna was the highest civilian honour given by the Republic of India. It was introduced in 1954.Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan and Nelson Mandela, two Non-Indians received the award in 1987 and 1990.

7.Babar was the first Mughal Emperor and founder of the Mughal dynasty.His original name was Zahir Ud-din Muhammad.He was the descendant of the Mongol conqueror Genghis Khan and Turkic conqueror Timur.

8.Taj Mahal was built by  Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal.The construction of Taj Mahal spanned over 22 years.It is one of the wonders of the world and  also listed in UNESCO World Heritage Site.

9.Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro were the biggest cities near the Indus River in the Sindh region(now in Pakistan).The both cities belongs to ancient civilization named Indus Valley / Harrapan civilization.

10.Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles(1781-1826) was a British East Indian Administrator and founded the port city of Singapore in 1819 as a trading site.
