What is meant by Domain Name?

A domain name is the identity of a website in the form of alphabets. It helps visitors to locate a website on the internet. It will be unique.Internet users access websites using domain names. In other words,Domain names offer a more intuitive way to name and find a website. Each domain name replaces a string of meaningless numbers (an IP address) with a simple word or expression.

In short,Domain name is the text name corresponding to the numeric IP address of a computer on the Internet. The domain of a website is the URL entered to access the site. It's used instead of an IP address since it is easier to remember words  than long numbers.

Domain names are used in URLs to identify particular web pages.Every domain name has a suffix that indicates which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. There are only a limited number of such domains. For example:

  • gov - Government agencies

  • edu - Educational institutions

  • org - Organizations (nonprofit)

  • mil - Military

  • com - commercial business

  • net - Network organizations

  • ca - Canada

  • th - Thailand

  • Because the Internet is based on IP addresses, not domain names, every Web server requires a Domain Name System (DNS) server to translate domain names into IP addresses.
