Put on a happy face! Selena Gomez dons a cheery t-shirt as she visits a children's hospital in New Zealand with Justin Bieber!

Smiley, happy people: Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez cheered up sick children during a visit to a hospital in New Zealand today

Selena Gomez made an inspired fashion choice today as she donned a yellow smiley face t-shirt for a visit to a children's hospital.

Accompanying pop sensation boyfriend Justin Bieber, the Disney star was all smiles as the couple continued their tour of the Antipodes with a visit to Starship Hospital in Auckland during a promotional visit to New Zealand.

The 19-year-old managed to mix style with a sense of fun as she teamed the light-hearted top with a trendy studded denim shirt and skinny black jeans.

Canadian phenomenon Justin sported a white t-shirt under a sleeveless plaid shirt and waved to fans as the pair left the building.

Bieber has been an advocate for the Starship Foundation, calling on his fans to donate money in the launch of his Believe Charity Drive since November of last year.

The couple visited the sick children in advance of the teen's surprise show on Auckland's waterfront later this afternoon.

Bieber's New Zealand schedule has been kept under wraps, but he is expected to bungy jump rom the Auckland Harbour Bridge again -  as he did on his last visit in 2010  - followed by a showcase for around 200 fans on Auckland's waterfront.

The location and time of the concert are being kept top secret to avoid a mob of fans showing up.
Even those with tickets will not officially know where the concert is until later today.
Fans eagerly awaited his arrival from Australia at the Auckland airport last night but were disappointed when he avoided the main terminal.

Hopeful Beliebers also waited outside the Langham hotel this morning, the same place One Direction stayed in April, to catch a glimpse of the heartthrob.

The last time the teenage superstar was in New Zealand, a hysterical group of girls shoved his mother out of the way and stole his baseball cap causing speculation as to why he is reticent to appear.

Bieber is in New Zealand promoting his latest album, Believe, until Friday.

Janessa Britton, 7, was among the fans lined up to see Canadian teen pop idol Justin Bieber perform for the 'Today' show Friday in Rockefeller Center.
An epidemic of Bieber Fever has broken out in midtown.

Dozens of Justin Bieber fans thronged along W. 48th St., camping out for days ahead of the “Boyfriend” singer’s free mini-concert in Rockefeller Center for NBC’s “Today” show Friday morning.

Symptoms were visible throughout the building crowd: Bieber T-shirts, bracelets, blankets.

Amina Morsi, 16, of Brooklyn, was first in line, having camped out with her best friend since 6 a.m. Tuesday.
"I'm here for his music,” she told the Daily News. “The way he talks about to ‘never say never,’ just the way he sings with passion. I think it's very inspiring."

Science Confirms: Bieber Fever Is More Contagious Than the Measles

A mathematical model proves that Bieber fever is one of the catchiest diseases of our time.
bieber-615.jpg

Imagine: you're the parent of an adolescent Justin Bieber fan. At some point, the musical heartthrob has probably struck fear into your heart -- the fear that your child is in the clutches of an unhealthy obsession.

What would possess someone to buy up Bieber toys, read Bieber fan fiction, watch Bieber movies, and sleep in Justin Bieber pajamas? The clinical term for this condition is Bieber fever, and according to a Canadian mathematical model, you're right to be afraid. It's even more contagious than the measles, one of the fastest-spreading diseases on earth.
To reach their alarming conclusion, University of Ottawa scientists Valerie Tweedle and Robert J. Smith? (the question mark is a part of his name -- don't ask) started with a standard tool in epidemiology called an SIR model. SIR models help researchers categorize people who aresusceptible to a pathogen, infected, or recovered. In a SIR model's most basic form, patients migrate from S to I to R in a linear fashion.

Bieber fever is especially nasty, though. People who are infected with it can recover -- either through eventual boredom or through Bieber's negative media coverage -- but crucially, once they've recovered, they become susceptible to the illness all over again with exposure to positive media coverage, or by coming into contact with the still-infected. Considering the intensity with which Bieber fever often grips its victims, that means the disease is more or less self-sustaining.

Fitting all these details into a SIR model required Tweedle and Smith? to adapt it for their purposes. What they came up with was an SBR model, where the "B" stands for Bieber-infected.
Screen shot 2012-06-13 at 11.14.13 AM.png
Plugging in values for all these variables gets you a rough idea of how contagious Bieber fever really is. Tweedle and Smith? used a hypothetical population of 2,000 people -- about the size of a school or a small town. Toying with one of the equation's key levers, the boredom rate, the scientists found that Bieber fever is at its most contagious when it burns slowly.
But of course, the scientists didn't stop there. Adding in the effect of media coverage -- running the model when coverage was positive, negative, a mix of both, constant, or periodic -- produced wildly different outcomes. Naturally, the way to eradicate Bieber fever once and for all is to produce negative coverage nonstop. Unfortunately, a steady stream of purely positive PR would ensure that everyone would become infected, eventually.

In the most nuanced scenario, Tweedle and Smith? posit that interest in Justin Bieber needs to reach a media threshold, before which the infection simply spreads naturally but after which is spurred on by favorable news coverage. In this case, the blast of positive news is followed by a negative retort. The unfavorable coverage drags down the number of infected and moves them into the "recovered" category.

Or would it? In reading over the researchers' work, I think I've found a hole. As it stands, the SBR model treats the effect of media coverage as a binary: pro-Bieber coverage aids contagion; anti-Bieber coverage hinders it. But a second-order effect of (negative) media coverage is that it may wind up mobilizing Bieber supporters in such a way that it raises the likelihood of their transmitting the disease to others. After all, when a community comes under attack, the natural tendency is toward self-defense, especially if said community believes in the moral certitude of its cause.

If what I'm suggesting is accurate, then Tweedle's and Smith?'s model actually underestimates the contagiousness of Bieber fever by an unknown amount. This is scary stuff. Suppose negative media coverage engendered a countervailing response from the infected that was of equal magnitude. Then conceivably, the illness would be incurable. Sure, members of the infected would gradually grow bored of the dude by growing out of it, but not before infecting everyone else from the ages of 5 to 17. What we're looking at is a persistent generational disease that affects everyone of a certain age -- kind of like the chicken pox, only far more contagious and unpleasant.
Somebody needs to tell the CDC about this. Before it's too late.

Justin Bieber Visits Elementary School in 'Ellen' Clip: Watch

In December, Justin Bieber paid a visit to Whitney Elementary School in Las Vegas to deliver a special performance and donate a large sum to help the school's underprivileged attendees. The pop superstar's heartwarming visit -- the Biebs even shed a tear! -- was captured and aired on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Wednesday (Jan. 4).
After promising to visit a school in need during his appearance on "Ellen" in November, Justin arrives at Whitney Elementary to high-five the students and hug the appreciative principal, Sherrie Gahn. "I can really see in your eyes that you really want to make a change and you really want to help these kids, and I admire you," the 17-year-old tells the principal.

Justin not only performs his hits "Mistletoe" and "Baby" for the adoring kids, but also bestows a $100,000 check to Whitney Elementary, as well as $100,000 worth of toys to brighten the holidays of its students. "This is the first time they're gonna go home and want to go home for the holidays," says Principal Gahn, a sentiment that makes the singer tear up and turn away from the camera.

While Justin Bieber's noble act helped ring in the holidays, the singer toasted 2012 by performing on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" and releasing a collaborative single with Jaden Smith titled "Happy New Year." His next album, "Believe," is expected to be released this year.
