Free Educational Games:Science Education:Rigglefish Award Winner Games

RiggleFish, a Gold Medal Winner at the Serious Play Conference, held August 23 – 25, 2011 at the DigiPen Institute of Technology in Redmond, is a computer-based educational game teaches players about scientific inquiry and genetics.

RiggleFish, finalist for a prestigious award, is developed by UL Lafayette’s Center for Innovative Learning and Assessment Technologies and Texas A&M .The game is a finalist in the 2011 Adobe Design Achievement Awards competition in the Innovation in Interactive Media in Education category.

In RiggleFish, players take on the role of Dr. Waters, a geneticist tasked by the government to develop a source for Omega X. This fatty acid can be used as a protectant against a deadly bioweapon.

RiggleFish, a recently discovered fish species, is rich in Omega X. Players work in a top-secret underwater research laboratory to breed a type of RiggleFish that produces Omega X and can be farmed to provide a source for the needed protectant.

To accomplish this task, students must use observation and testing skills to breed these fish to obtain the target RiggleFish.

There are three levels of the game, each appropriate for different grade levels. Level 1 matches the National Science Education standards for middle school. Level 2 is for high school biology classes and Level 3 is the most challenging and is geared toward advanced high school learners.

Free Educational Games:Verbs & adverbs

What are verbs ?

Verbs are action words -
e.g. eat, sleep, talk, walk, do, buy are all verbs

What are adverbs?

Adverbs are words that tell us more about verbs....they add information to the verb.
(A verb is a 'doing' word or a 'being' word, e.g. 'walk', 'feel')
Using adverbs makes your sentences more interesting.
Any verb you use can have an adverb added.
The girl smiled nervously.
The boy grinned sheepishly.
The light shone feebly.
We use adverbs:
  • to say how something happens
    'The family walk (how?) quickly.'

  • to say where or when something happens
    'I met him (when?) yesterday.'

  • to say how often something happens
'She gets the bus (how often?) daily.'

  • to make the meaning of an adjective, adverb or verb stronger or weaker
'Dave eats (degree?) more slowly than his wife.'

Adverbs are often created from adjectives (describing words that tell you more about nouns) by adding 'ly' to the end of the adjective.
e.g. slow becomes slowly
'Joe is a slow person. He walks slowly.'
Certain words change when they become adverbs. If an adjective ends in a 'y' you need to change the 'y' to an 'i' before adding 'ly'.
Happy becomes happily
Heavy becomes heavily

Activity Play on Verbs and Adverbs

Interesting Facts

You can tell the temperature by listening to the chirping of a cricket.

Wonder How ?

Here is the answer.

The frequency of chirping varies according to temperature. To get a rough estimate of the temperature in degrees fahrenheit, count the number of chirps in 15 seconds and then add 37. The number you get will be an approximation of the outside temperature.
